First Time Event
Thank you for taking the time and effort to include your community in Walk to School Day. More schools participate every year. Here are a few examples and ideas, ranging from simple to elaborate, to inspire your own event planning:
This is the first time we have participated in this event. I think we are starting on a small scale. Maybe taking some pictures, inviting the press, promoting it during our Open House, and hopefully getting as many kids to walk or ride their bike to school on Walk to School Day.
Lakewood Elementary School, Holland, MI
This is our first year doing this. We are sending letters home encouraging students to walk or ride their bike to school.
Dix Street Elementary School, Otsego, MI
This is our first time participating in the event. We plan to have several "walking buses" which will encourage students and staff members to walk to school as well as encourage parents to join. We will provide a breakfast snack and participating students will join in the "Be Safe, Be Seen Fashion Show". We will provide educational lessons for students during that week as well as sending information home to encourage parents to have conversations with their children about biking/walking safety, healthy habits, car pollution, etc...
Gardiner School, Gardiner, MT
We are the first school in the Socorro School District to have a Walk and Roll to School day. The principal will have music along the route, walking buses will be formed with teachers and parents. The city will provide police patrol for safety. The route is along a newly paved street with new sidewalks. The newspaper will be contacted for coverage. The students will make posters in art class about the event. Parents and community members will be invited to walk along. This will be the kick off to get more students to routinely walk to school along a safe route.
