School-based Welcome
Greet walkers with stickers, gifts and refreshments. Public officials can be invited to say a few words and, if willing, even address parents’ suggestions on improving walking routes. This can be formal, for the press, or at an informal coffee or chat. This is an excellent bonus activity to any event.
Some event ideas:
- Carry signs that display pedestrian safety messages.
- Have a nutritious breakfast before or after the walk.
- Invite the school mascot or wear school colors while walking.
- Carry colorful balloons during the walk.
- Play walking songs.
- Invite local celebrities to participate.
- Take a tour of an ambulance or fire truck in conjunction with the walk.
